Gutter Cleaning ……DIY

Gutter cleaning is one of those types of chores that many people will not like to do. The funny thing is – if you look around hard enough you can find out who those people are.

They probably have plants growing in their gutters right above their homes and aren’t even aware of it. In other cases, the gutters become so overwhelmed with sediment, dirt, and shingle coatings that they become extremely heavy, and eventually break away from the roof.

Why gutter cleaning is important?

And why this is a home necessity that is almost always overlooked. The information provided here will give you a better idea about the cleaning process, and why gutters are important overall.

Before getting started, it’s important to realize that gutters are put on your home for a specific reason. They not only keep the rain and water that trickles off of your roof from drowning you when you approach her home, but they also keep other items from falling such as sediment, dirt, and small rocks that fall from the roof on a consistent basis. There are specific ways in order to keep your gutters clean, but it’ll be up to you to make sure this happens. It’s important to realize that cleaning the gutters will not be a very popular task, but by doing so, this will prevent you from having unforeseen roofing and gutter issues in the future.

  • Cleaning Gutters the Right Away

There is a right way and a wrong way to clean your gutters. Far too many people try to wash the heavy sediment that is found in their gutters down their gutter downspout. It’s important to remove any type of sediment or foreign material from your gutters before rinsing anything down the downspout. The proper way to clean your gutters will be to remove this material as much as you can before rinsing your gutter. The other important aspect will be to never grab a hold of your gutter or put pressure on it in any way. When cleaning the gutter and scooping out the material, it will be important to hold the bottom of the gutter while you are putting force inside. This will prevent you from pulling on the gutter in any way, and detaching it from the roofing eave.

  • Why Should Gutters Be Cleaned

Gutters need to be cleaned for a variety of reasons. The first and most important is to make sure that they do not overflow and cause water to drain in areas that weren’t meant for it. The other aspect is to keep foreign material away from the perimeter of the home. This can be the dirt and grime the drains off of the roof throughout the year. This dirt and grime, over time, can cause discoloration to your walkways and driveways if not properly taken care of. The other important aspect to remember is that if your gutters are not cleaned on a frequent basis, they can become overwhelmed with debris making them unstable. Once they become unstable, it only takes a small storm or any other unforeseen element to detach them from the home.

  • How Do You Know When to Clean Your Gutters

It’s important not to wait until you see plants growing from your gutters before cleaning them. Gutter cleaning should take place at least twice a year. The best times of the year to clean your gutters will be in the spring, and in the fall. This will ensure that your gutters are well-prepared for the winter months, and the rainy seasons. This will also ensure that there isn’t any type of debris found in your gutter that could potentially cause issues down the road. Now, after reading this, you will really know when the best time to clean your gutters will be if you haven’t been consistent about doing this in the past. If you need to know more, you can talk to a professional roofing company to help you understand a bit more about the process.

  • Why Is It so Important to Keep Gutters Clean?

Gutters are not meant to withstand a huge amount of pressure. If you understand more about how your gutters are attached to your roof, you will know why this is a problem. Your gutters are not held on to your roof in a way that will prevent them from ever detaching themselves if they become overwhelmed with debris. This is why it’s extremely important to keep your gutters clean to ensure this doesn’t happen, and that your gutters are kept safe and secure right where they are.

  • Why Do Gutters Get Clogged?

Gutters get clogged for a number of reasons. Some of the most important reasons are debris that falls from the roof. This debris can be in the form of shingles, dirt, grime, tennis balls, leaves, branches, or variety of other items that fall or find themselves on the roof. It’s important to remember that dirt builds up on your roof over time. This dirt becomes loose and falls in your gutter when there is a heavy rain or a storm. Over time, this dirt will build up to a point it will clog your downspouts. Once your downspouts have been clogged, the water settles in your gutters along with the dirt and debris. When gutter cleaning is not performed properly, this could be a potential problem.

  • Is There a Cost To Have Gutters Cleaned Professionally?

You will find that there are many different professional companies that will come out and clean your gutters. They will not only provide you with this professional service, but they will also help you in determining whether or not your gutters need to be replaced or repaired. This service can be done by a roofing company, so you may want to consider this the next time you plan to climb up the ladder and clean your gutters.

Gutter Cleaning Done Professionally

Although taking care of this issue will not be a huge task, for many it could create even further problems if they’ve never done it before. thanks for the share! i had my gutter cleaned several weeks ago and they are still overflowing do you know what could be causing this?

    • Hi Sandra, most likely the gutters were not cleaned out properly i would try to narrow down exactly where the gutters are still overflowing at. Then give a call to who you had service your gutters to let them know the problem still exist and the exact location be specific. This time i would supervise the service, this is key!!!!. Also have them check that the gutters are properly aligned and not holding any water.

interesting stuff, i wish i would have seen this last week i just did my own gutter cleaning and the one downspout still looks clogged any recommendations?

    • Hi Tom, the best way to be sure would be to water test the downspout. If the water does not go down the drain it’s clogged. I recommend you get your power drill with the standard 1/4 hex bit or screw driver depending on how they are attached. If they are rivets the fastest way will be to use the 1/4 hex bit with a zip screw to break the rivets. Once all are removed take the downspout apart shack it out, thats it!!! now you have a fully cleaned downspout this is the most affective and for sure way.
